It covers a wide range of topics, from healthy eating, to the treatment of specific ailments and illnesses. It also includes some veterinary advice. The book is believed to have been edited and expanded in the ninth century in the scriptorium of the Abbey of St. Gall in what is now Switzerland and became the core of a wider collection known as the "Anthimus" or "Medicina Plinii". The author draws on the work of ancient Greek and Roman physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen and also includes some of his own observations. The book provides a fascinating insight into early medical practice and is still relevant today for its emphasis on healthy eating and lifestyle.
