Hardcover. 316 pp. The first of an eventual two-part dystopian series, a novel about a gifted inventor and scientist, Felix Charlock, who is recruited by the mysterious firm of :Merlin's", a superbly organized and successful company with international ties and influence. Felix hesitates to accept but after a trip to Turkey marries into the firm. His new world is peopled by characters such as Iolanthe, a prostitute; Caradoc, a jesting architect, Sipple the clown, and with others who frequented a brothel conducted by the upright woman Mrs. Henniker.
