Winner of the inaugural Booker Prize in 1969. It was 1956 and he was in Port Said. About these two facts Townrow was reasonably certain. He had been summoned there, to Egypt, by the widow of his deceased friend, Elie Khoury. Having been found dead in the street, she is convinced he was murdered, but nobody seems to agree with her. What of Leah Strauss, the mistress? And of the invading British paratroops? Only an Englishman, surely, would take for granted that the British would have behaved themselves. In this weirdly disorientating world, Townrow is forced towards a re-examination of the basic rules by which he has been living his life; and into a realization that he too may have something to answer for.

Vendeur : M RICHARDSON RARE BOOKS (PBFA Member), Ashby cum Fenby, NE Lincolnshire, LINCS, Royaume-Uni
Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. First Thus. A lovely bright copy of this scarce first BCS edition of the first ever Booker Prize winner. Hardly read by the look of it. The red cloth boards are mostly fresh and bright and with crisp title lettering on the spine, although there is a splogy stain in the centre of the front board from a drink spill most probably (I think this could be carefully cleaned by using the correct solution but I haven't done this in case it fades the area effected.) There are no inscriptions and the pages are lovely and clean throughout the book, albeit the page block edge looks rather toned. The dust jacket is not price clipped and is in bright, clean condition without a hint of sun fading. Now covered in a protective, removable jacket sleeve. N° de réf. du vendeur 012697
