Synopsis

It was 1956 and he was in Port Said. About these two facts, Townrow was reasonably certain. He had been summoned there, to Egypt, by the widow of his deceased friend, Elie Khoury. Having been found dead in the street, she is convinced he was murdered, but nobody seems to agree with her. What of Leah Strauss, the mistress? And of the invading British paratroops? Only an Englishman, surely, would take for granted that the British would have behaved themselves. In this weirdly disorientating world, Townrow is forced towards a re-examination of the basic rules by which he has been living his life; and into a realization that he too may have something to answer for.

À propos de l'auteur

PH Newby was born in Sussex in 1918. After working as a school teacher, he was called up into the Royal Army Medical Corps, and served in both France and Egypt. In 1942 he was seconded as a lecturer at the University of Cairo, remaining there for four years. On his return to Britain, he began working for the BBC, initially for The Listener before being appointed controller of the Third Programme in 1958. Under his control, it would foster many young writers, notably Tom Stoppard and Dennis Potter. By 1975 he had risen to Managing Director of Radio. He was created a CBE in 1972, and throughout his career as a broadcaster, continued to publish as a novelist. Acclaimed by writers such as Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, he was awarded the inaugural Booker Prize in 1969, for Something to Answer For, from a shortlist that included Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark. He died in 1997, and was survived by his wife and two daughters.
