Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Straight uncreased spine. -- An experimental novel presented as the collected writings of a missing author, this book assembles the supposed works of Marvin K. Mooney, a figure who may or may not exist. What the reader encounters is not a linear life story but an invented archive: essays, reviews, lectures, stories, poems, letters and notebooks that circle around Mooney, sometimes written by him, sometimes about him. The pieces argue with each other, contradict details, and steadily erode any simple idea of a stable author behind the texts. Within this frame, Higgs uses Mooney to explore questions about identity and authorship. The book plays with the gap between the name on the cover, the fictional writer inside, and the reader trying to hold everything together. Many of the writings comment directly on literature itself, attacking traditional expectations of plot, character and realism and defending experimental forms that foreground their own construction instead of hiding the seams. The result can be read both as a story about a difficult, perhaps vanished writer and as a guided tour through late 20th century avant-garde writing. A significant debut in American experimental fiction, the book belongs to the tradition of Borges, Nabokov's Pale Fire and Pessoa's heteronyms - fiction that asks what authorship means by staging its own disappearance. For readers interested in metafiction, postmodern narrative and the idea of the novel as a collage of different kinds of writing. -- Before the novel was published, Higgs spent years planting references to Mooney across the internet and in small literary magazines, building a credible authorial identity complete with a biography, a publication history and endorsements from real writers.
