Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. A sweeping celebration of one of the most original and fearless voices in modern political thought.Best known for his landmark work Crisis and Leviathan: Critical Episodes in the Growth of American Government, Robert Higgs has repeatedly reshaped how scholars and citizens understand the relationship among government expansion, economic crises, and individual liberty. This carefully curated volume brings together his most influential writings, offering readers an unparalleled look at a career that spans civil rights, wartime political economy, the military-industrial complex, the regulatory state, the Food and Drug Administration, and the long-run growth of government power. Higgs's scholarship stands out not only for its range, but for its intellectual craftsmanship. He boldly challenged conventional economic analysis by probing the reliability of official dataquestioning how statistics are gathered, what they omit, and how they shape public understanding. Refusing to treat numbers as inherently authoritative, Higgs incorporated historical evidence, institutional analysis, and human experience to illuminate the complex forces shaping political and economic life. At its core, Higgs's work centers on the human stakes of political economy: freedom, coercion, and the conditions necessary for human flourishing. The Indispensable Robert Higgs introduces new readers to his groundbreaking insights while providing longtime admirers with a powerful reminder of his lasting influence. Timely, provocative, and deeply insightful, this collection showcases a scholar whose work continues to shape debates about power, policy, and liberty today. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. Paperback, 352 pages, NOT ex-library. Great shape, some minor handling wear only. Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Straight uncreased spine. -- An experimental novel presented as the collected writings of a missing author, this book assembles the supposed works of Marvin K. Mooney, a figure who may or may not exist. What the reader encounters is not a linear life story but an invented archive: essays, reviews, lectures, stories, poems, letters and notebooks that circle around Mooney, sometimes written by him, sometimes about him. The pieces argue with each other, contradict details, and steadily erode any simple idea of a stable author behind the texts. Within this frame, Higgs uses Mooney to explore questions about identity and authorship. The book plays with the gap between the name on the cover, the fictional writer inside, and the reader trying to hold everything together. Many of the writings comment directly on literature itself, attacking traditional expectations of plot, character and realism and defending experimental forms that foreground their own construction instead of hiding the seams. The result can be read both as a story about a difficult, perhaps vanished writer and as a guided tour through late 20th century avant-garde writing. A significant debut in American experimental fiction, the book belongs to the tradition of Borges, Nabokov's Pale Fire and Pessoa's heteronyms - fiction that asks what authorship means by staging its own disappearance. For readers interested in metafiction, postmodern narrative and the idea of the novel as a collage of different kinds of writing. -- Before the novel was published, Higgs spent years planting references to Mooney across the internet and in small literary magazines, building a credible authorial identity complete with a biography, a publication history and endorsements from real writers.…
