This is the first in a series covering Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe. With essays, timelines and general histories of twentieth century German history, this volume offers the stories of four German Jews who describe growing up in Weimar Germany and who fled their country just in time. Also included are essays that delve into the complex relationship between Germans and Jews, testimonies of Czech, Hungarian and Romanian Jews who were liberated from concentration camps in Germany, as well as personal stories of Russian and American soldiers who liberated those camps.
