Although attention in much recent literature has focused on politically unstable Third World nations suffering military coups and counter-coups, many developing nations have experienced various types of civilian rule. The contributors to this volume explore the phenomenon of stable civilian rule in the Third World by means of case studies of selected African, Asian, Latin American and Middle-Eastern countries. They provide histories of civil-military relations; identify and analyze societal, internal and international factors responsible for keeping the armed forces in the barracks; classify the nature of existing civilian regimes; and project future developments.
