Daphne Moore introduces the anthology with a memoir of her brother and her notes bring special insights into his development as a writer. Writing in The Times when John Moore died in 1967, Sir Compton Mackenzie compared him with Gilbert White, Jefferies and Cobbett for like them he could capture in his writing the smell of river, field, hedgerow and copse.
