This fascinating collection of more than 100 poems is, essentially, a poetic journal in which Alyson Hunter chronicles not great world events but the smaller disasters and miracles of a more private life. Spanning 30 years, these poems display a vivid sence of place. Unsurprisingly, then, that Hunter is a professional photographer with work in presigious collections. Cornwall is remembered fondly, but unsentimentally, though the real backdrop is London, seen frequently through a whisky-soaked haze. Soho is her milieu, Kettners, the Groucho, Gerrys and the French. She has an attractive, uncomplicated style with an infectious delight in words archaic (whomsoever, vainglorious, victress). She also reveals an eye for the macabre when, in the Chelsea Hotel, she discovers I love you written in blood illuminated underneath the lampshade or; in Ireland, a neighbour's severed head rools near the hnd of an injured child. There are portraits, too, of Seamus Heaney and W.H. Auden in a meeting in an Oxford tea shop and a touching memoir of legendary Soho bon viveur Michael Elphick. Parodies are witty yet sypathetic; of John Milton and Rupert Brooke in which she muses on being buried face down to look through the earth to her native New Zealand. Bizarrely comic is the image of being cruelly mocked by a portion of whitebait after being stood up on a date. This is deeply personal stuff, uncomfortable when dissecting broken relationships and sometimes scathingly comic but always immensely readable. --Cary Gee, Tribune Magazine, 11th June 2008

'Night Bus' is Alyson Hunter's second collection of verse, and I found it an enjoyable read, not least because it charts a chronological path through the poet's life, moving from the Cornish countryside, through living in big city America and back to the delights of North London. This book is worthy of attention and don't let it pass you by. --Cary Gee, Tribune Magazine
