Explore how religion begins and evolves across cultures, from early beliefs to modern thought.
This scholarly work surveys a wide range of theories about religion’s origin and development. It outlines why scholars disagree on what religion really is and how it starts, from feelings of awe and fear to practices, myths, and rituals. The text examines ideas such as ancestor worship, animism, taboo, and the role of moral life in religious growth, while noting the limits of any single explanation. You will encounter careful discussions of how different cultures express belief, how structures like ritual and sacrament arise, and why definitions of religion remain contested. The author emphasizes that religion is a complex whole, shaped by psychology, culture, and history, rather than a single simple cause.

Excerpt from The Tree of Life: A Study of Religion
It may assist the reader if I state briefly the reasons which have let to the writing of this book. In a somewhat lengthy study of primitive religion and culture, the problem of the origin of religion naturally came forward from time to time. Before attempting the solution of such a problem, it was necessary to examine the origins and development of some one at least of the higher religions, its methods and results, its theology and its practice, from the psychological and the sociological points of view. It became increasingly clear that the problem of origin involves the problem of the function of religion. The whole inquiry was suitably completed by an analysis of the contending forces, which have produced the present religious crisis; and here, curiously enough, may be gathered up several clues supplied by primitive religion, and since lost sight of.
