Excerpt from An Introduction to Philo Judæus
Publication of a small book on Philo needs no apology. In all the great body of literature devoted to him and his thought, there is no satisfactory work which can be given the general reader to introduce him to the subject. What brief studies exist are antiquated by recent researches, and in no case were written to serve the double purpose of helping the beginner to make a start in an intelligent reading of Philo and of presenting what is now the point of view from which all study of Philo must, whether in agreement or disagreement, depart.
The problem of the relation of early Christianity to its environment, which has engrossed historians of religion, and which conservative scholars - conservative technically as well as theologically - have tended to belittle or neglect, is the great problem of the next generation of students in the field. It has been easy to dismiss the work of historians of religion who have been content simply to list pagan parallels to the New Testament, so long as conclusions of great importance were drawn from mere similarities between early Christian ideas and those of religions scattered from India to Britain.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life and thought of a fascinating figure from the first century AD: Philo of Alexandria. A wealthy and politically influential Jew, Philo also devoted himself to extensive writing, leaving behind a treasure trove of philosophical and religious treatises. Living in a vibrant crossroads of cultures, Philo wrestled with the complexities of reconciling his Jewish faith with the powerful ideas of Greek philosophy and the burgeoning mystery religions. This book explores this intricate dance between tradition and innovation, examining how Philo navigated his dual identity and shaped a unique blend of Judaism and Hellenism. Through careful analysis of Philo's own words, the author unveils the man behind the text, revealing his inner struggles and aspirations. We encounter a Philo deeply devoted to Jewish law and tradition, yet also captivated by the philosophical and mystical currents of his time. This book delves into his understanding of God, the Logos, the human condition, and the path to salvation, offering a window into a rich and complex inner world. Ultimately, this book sheds light on a pivotal moment in history, illuminating the intellectual and religious landscape that gave rise to both Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity. By exploring Philo's unique synthesis of ideas, we gain a deeper understanding of the fertile ground from which these two major religious traditions emerged.
