After all, it is the Roman Imperial A ge, and no other, which aroused the initial interest; faintly (I fear) reflected in this book. And yet the whole course of Greek speculation is examined, from start to finish, from a peculiar and restricted stand point. I hope that this embrace of an almost infinite topic will be pardoned: it did not, to me, seem possible to account for the phenomena of Roman Platonism orS toicism (in reality, much the same thing), unless in such a survey we had attempted to understand the intrinsic spring of bewilderment and philosophy, mean the selfish desire for personal happiness, attained only by a satisfactory interpretation of our own nature, and the wider Nature that enfolds, restrains, and perhaps completes it.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. From its diverse origins in ancient Greece, this book traces the development of Platonic philosophy, revisiting the historical context and philosophical importance of Platonism. Exploring the tensions between the individual and society, the author considers how Platoâs philosophy sought to reconcile the inherent dualism of subject and object in the pursuit of happiness and freedom. Situated within the broader context of Hellenistic thought, the book delves into the influence of the Ionian natural philosophers, the skeptical Sophists, and the religious mysticism of the New Pythagoreans on Platoâs ideas. This historical examination illuminates the enduring relevance of Platoâs philosophy and its insights into the fundamental nature of human existence.
