Synopsis
Vermont 1947 --A French-American familyWhen six-year-old Michelle’s father tries to give her a “nice surprise,” her mother sends her away, to a boarding school in Canada.“But why?” the child asks. She does not get a direct answer.For years in Canada, and then at her aunt Lena’s in New Hampshire, Michelle continues to be haunted with the thought that her mother doesn’t like her. At sixteen years old, she finally finds out what happened, and she’s devastated.When she completes high school, she returns home to help her mother, because her father is in prison. When she visits him, she finds out that a childhood friend is also in prison. She meets him again, and they fall in love--and eventually get married.
