Synopsis

Vermont , USA – Michelle was six years old when her father said he had a “nice” surprise” for her. She was thrilled. He had never done that before! When her mother found out what it was, she became furious, and sent the girl away to a boarding school in Canada. When school ended, she could not return home. She stayed with the nuns for thesummer, and eventually went to live with her aunt Lena in New Hampshire. In the meantime, in Canada, she became friends with 8-year-old JP-- Jean Paul Larivière; and they met white-bearded Ivan, an American, who had just come out of prison. Later on, he returns into her life. A few days later, JP said that his family was moving to the USA to find work. He and Michelle had become very good friends, and the girl missed him very much. Eventually Lena came for her, and Michelle thrived in her aunt’s very positiveenvironment. Yet, that never kept her free from the distorted, confused feelings about her motherand father that haunted her at different times of night and day. When she found out that her father went to prison, she visited him, and met JP, who was in prison, awaiting trial for aggravated assault. He claimed that he was innocent. She felt a great liking for him, and could not believe that he had done such a thing. Yet, maybe he did, she thought…and continued to hope that he was telling her the truth. Eventually the family secret from the past was revealed, and Michelle’s life was changed forever.
