Synopsis

LARGER PRINT EDITION August 31st, 1888. A policeman finds a woman murdered. A young woman is on the streets of Whitechapel selling her body to survive. As Jack the Ripper’s autumn of terror begins, in different ways these two people are drawn into the hunt for the murderer. By the end of Jack’s killing spree, catching the killer has become personal and their lives will have changed forever. The murders are seen through the eyes of the two protagonists, allowing the reader to experience the miserable, degraded lives of the women upon whom Jack preyed. It is unflinching in its descriptions of the victims’ terrible deaths at the hands of the monster who walked amongst them. This book is about the Jack the Ripper murders but it is also about the lives of the people involved. The ending has a satisfying and unusual twist. It is moving, surprising, and in places even amusing as the story takes the reader through those ten weeks in the autumn of 1888. The desire to give the women a voice was a strong motivation for writing this novel. The author uses professional expertise to interpret witness statements and reported accounts of the murders, resulting in some fresh conclusions about the victims’ lives and deaths, which are woven into a work of fiction.
