August 31st, 1888. A policeman finds a woman dead. A young woman is on the streets of Whitechapel selling her body to survive. As Jack the Ripper's autumn of terror begins, their lives will never be the same again. In a series of bizarre twists of fate, each is inextricably drawn into the hunt for the killer. This is the story of people whose lives are destined to cross. The story reveals the Ripper murders through the eyes of the women upon whom Jack preyed. They are often described as filthy, cackling, dissolute, alcoholic prostitutes, with the implication that their terrible deaths were the wages of sin. They were no such thing. They were desperate, poverty-stricken victims of Victorian attitudes as much as they were victims of Jack, and every day was a struggle to survive. This book gives the victims a voice and is unflinching in its descriptions of their terrible deaths at the hands of a monster who walked amongst them. The story remains faithful to the known historical accounts but puts forward alternative explanations for some of the best-known facts. The ending has an unusual twist and provides an explanation as to why The Ripper was never brought to justice.
