In England and in America, in the early records, the surname of Hooper is spelled in various ways. In England, we have the names as "Hope, Hoope, Hupper, Hopper, and Hooper." It is probable that the surname of Hooper was first used in England about the year 1275. There is no record to show that it is older than this date. Whether the name was originally derived from a "trade" is not known.
