In this book the author recalls some of the history of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm which was reformed in 1937. When war came it still relied on its all purpose aircraft the Swordfish ( the 'Stringbag') which in 1940 scored a resounding success in the Battle of Taranto. The author records this aerial battle in detail as well as Cape Matapan, the sinking of the German Battleship BISMARCK and other notable action that involved that branch of the Navy. Posted to 821 Squadron flying Albacores from land bases in North Africa and Malta he was awarded the DSC. Ashort period on night anti-shipping patrols in the English Channel was followed by command of 848 Avenger Squadron in HMS Victorious. For leading his squadron in daylight dive-bombing attacks on Sumatra's oil refineries at Palembang, Davin Foster was awarded the DSO, and in subsequent opewrations in the Pacific, a bar to the DSC. This enthralling account of his personal experiences in four theatres of war brings home vividly what young men volunteering for this little known branch of the Royal Navy had to face. Lavishly illustrated in black and white photographs, many from the the author's own collection, some published here for the first time. Ref X 2. N° de réf. du vendeur 034427
