As a Registered Nurse and Specialist Practitioner, her clinical background focused on primary care and community nursing. Her current role involves working with practice partners, students and academic staff to deliver innovative learning experiences for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students. Kay’s research interests include the image of nursing, coaching and supervision in practice. She has published in peer-reviewed journals, written book chapters and edited a professional portfolio textbook, and presented her research at professional conferences.
Communication can be seen as fundamental to all nursing care and activity. As the world of healthcare continually changes, it is more important than ever for nurses to adapt and perfect their communication skills to provide effective, ethical care. The NMC Code (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2018a) refers to communication in many of its professional standards. Alongside this, the NMC standards of proficiency for registered nurses (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2018b) outline the communication and relationship skills that a newly registered nurse must be able to demonstrate in order to meet the required proficiency outcomes. Therefore, defining and understanding the concept of communication is the first stage in scaffolding your learning around this central aspect of person-centred care. This chapter does not aim to review all the available communication theories from a range of disciplines, but it will explore some of the relevant frameworks that can help us as nurses understand how we interact with each other and with patients/carers. It will also discuss the importance of self-awareness and reflection in the communication process.
