"The first collection in English to give a full accounting of Schad's peculiar genius. The 1920s German art movement "New Objectivity" (Neue Sachlichkeit) created a stark and indelible portrait of German society. Along with Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and George Grosz, artist Christian Schad is central to any appreciation of this fascinating period in both art and history. Schad is a contradictory character. For all his icy-cool realism, Schad's mesmerizing paintings are characterized by an intense engagement with his models. While he is best known as a realist, he is also credited by the Dadaists as the inventor of abstract photograms, or 'Schadographs.' Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Neue Galerie in New York, Christian Schad and the Neue Sachlichkeit includes over 140 full-color reproductions of Schad's paintings, drawings, woodcuts and 'Schadographs.'". Oversized Hardcover. Etat : Good. Published in conjunction with the exhibition @ the Neue Galerie, NYC (2003). Christian Schad (1894-1982) was a leading figure of the New Objectivity movement of the 1920s. His sharp-focused, often mysteriously erotic portraits epitomize the decadent glamour of the Weimar era. Schad began his artistic life in Zurich as a member of the Dada movement. The most appealing results of this period of experimentation were the small abstract photograms he made in 1919, the Schadographs. In the 1920s, Schad returned to Germany and began to create his celebrated portraits. These works are characterized by a disturbing, even mesmerizing intensity. The faces of the men and women he portrayed reflect a moment when decadence and melancholy coincided, and Schad succeeded brilliantly in capturing this fugitive, transitional state. Even when the artistâs paintings are apparently at their most objective, they engage in a complex theater of illusion. This volume traces the career of the artist, placing him in the context of other leading artists of the new Objectivity movement. Bibliography, Checklist, Selected Exhibitions, Selected Publications, Index. Illustrations throughout. 260p. N° de réf. du vendeur 1811590
