A propos de cet article

Description :

1p., pen and ink on paper. 4to. A forceful plea for support written six days before the 1880 congressional elections in Ohio, addressed from the Ohio Republican Committee Rooms. Reading in part: "But a a few days now remain before the October election. I appeal to you to use all of your influence in behalf of, and devote all of your time to, the Republican party until the polls close upon the 12th inst. Our enemies have been doing all of the work possible and will strain every nerve to defeat us. The Republicans must meet them with equal vigor. I ask you also to use your influence with your Democratic friends and neighbors, and by personal influence and argument induce at least on Democrat to vote our ticket, You can do this. Do not throw this letter away as it is important. I beg of you to do all that you can to assist us. Do this and a great victory will have been achieved, to which you will have contributed your full share." Although Congress passed a law in 1845 setting a uniform date for nationwide presidential elections, it did not affect election dates for Congress, which remained within the discretion of State governments. In 1880, for the first time, no states held their elections after the established national election day, but five states held their elections before the rest of the country, including Ohio, which held theirs on October 12. Ohio Republican, John K. Nash (1842-1904), was a Civil war veteran, lawyer, and politician who served as the Ohio Attorney General from 1880-1883, and was elected as the 41st Governor of Ohio in 1900. At the time our letter was written, Nash was the Chairman of the Ohio Republican Committee. 'Our Enemies Have Been Doing All of the Work Possible'. Old folds, minor foxing, minor tears at fore edge, very good. N° de réf. du vendeur 313737
