Second edition of this charming, photographically-illustrated volume on the sheep breeds of Scotland, with interesting provenance. Very little is known about John Usher or this publication, although his publisher J. & J.H. Rutherford issued multiple agricultural tracts in the Scottish borderlands around this time. In the "Prefatory Note" Usher writes: "Two of the following papers on the 'Border Breeds of Sheep' were written about two years ago for The Field, and formed part of a series of articles from various pens, published from time to time in the columns of that journal, on the distinct breeds of cattle and sheep in Great Britain. The author wrote them in a fluent some people may think rather a flippant style, purposely avoiding dry statistics, with the view to suit the taste of a general newspaper readers.The publisher has spared neither trouble nor expense in getting up the small volume in an attractive form" (pp. v-vi). The photographs illustrate a range of subjects, chiefly exemplars of certain breeds accompanied by information such as name, accolades, ownership, and pedigree. Includes photographs of the Blackfaced Tup, Cheviot Tup, Cheviot Shearling Tup, Border Leicester Tup, Border Leicester Shearling Tup, Border Leicester Ewe, Half-Bred Ewe, and Blackfaced Ram. The volume also includes portraits of contributors and subjects mounted above their respective facsimile signatures, among them John Usher, Thomas Elliot, William Aitchison, John Clay, and Lord Palworth. With the ownership signature of James T. Craig, dated in the year of publication. Craig (1862 1930) was a cattleman who emigrated from Scotland in 1884, and managed the Three V Ranch outside of Belle Fourche, South Dakota. The Three V Ranch was owned by the Scottish firm, Western Ranches, Ltd., which owned and operated cattle ranches in the American West. John Clay, a well-known cattleman who contributed an appendix to the present volume, was an official of the same company. Rare in any edition; a previous cataloguer has written "Impossible to obtain" on the half-title in pencil. OCLC traces just three copies of the first edition of 1875, and four copies of the second edition, at Kansas State University, Adair County Public Library, History Colorado, and University of Guelph. We cannot locate any copies of this edition in the auction record. Original green cloth, front board gilt, decorative endpapers. Corners lightly rubbed. With the ownership signature of James T.
