'George Ridpath was a Church of Scotland minister and historian. In 1742 he was ordained minister of the parish of Stichill and Hume near Kelso, a post he held until his death in 1772. He was dedicated to his parishioners and took a great interest in the history of the area. He planned to write a biography of the Scottish historian George Buchanan (1506-82) but soon found the work impracticable. Instead, he began to focus his efforts on this history of the Borders. He was still working on the book at the time of his death and it was edited and published posthumously by his brother Philip in 1776.\n\nThe work describes the history of the Borders region and the reiver families that controlled the area before the 1603 Union of the Crowns. This era was later romanticised by poets and authors such as Sir Walter Scott in his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders and William Wordsworth in his play The Borderers.' \n\nFirst edition, rebound in an attractive half leather on oatmeal cloth.
