An important figure in British Naval history, Beresford 1846-1919, visited China at the behest of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to investigate how the break-up of the Chinese areas of the British Empire would impact China's role as a trading partner with Europe and the United States. One hundred years later, China still figures largely in Western trade negotiations.
