VOLUMES I AND II ONLY of a four volume set. Both sharing same 1838 Boston-James Munroe imprint. Hardcovers: H 20.25cm x L 12.75cm. Contemporary dark aquamarine cloth bindings; some mottling/staining and soiling to boards; spines darkened with slight fraying at bumped spine ends; slight flaking to spine's otherwise still bright gilt stamping. Text block edges and endpapers foxed/toned; old pencil ownership signatures at tops of front free endpapers and title pages; foxing to interior leaves; some early leaves of Volume I have creased/curled top fore-edge corners. Bindings are firm. Still an attractive pair of a notable American edition which was edited by Ralph Waldo Emerson with his "Advertisement" essay on pages iii-iv of Volume I. *** VOLUME I. [2], i-vi, 1-435 pages. Other contents include: "Jean Paul Friedrich Richter;" "State of German Literature;" "Life and Writings of Werner;" "Goethe's Helena;" "Goethe;" "Burns;" "The Life of Heyne;" "German Playwrights" (these being selected from "Edinburgh Review" and "Foreign Review"). *** VOLUME II.
