A good copy in a half calf binding with marbled boards. With 40 hand coloured plates of plants at the rear. The binding is clean and sound. The calf spine has raised bands with gilt lines and gilt titles in the compartments. It matches the corners but looks to be newer. The corners have some surface and edge scuffs and are bumped. The marbled paper on the boards looks to be original and has some light surface scuffs. The endpapers are clean apart from a pencil signature at the top of the front free paper. Contents: black and white frontispiece of Culpeper; title page; epistle to the reader; text including 'A Key to Galen's Method of Physic' 398pp; index 4 pp; and 40 plates bound at the rear. The frontispiece has been laid down and has some loss at the edges and the title has an old repair in the top gutter which affects the 'C' of 'Complete' in the title. The paper is overall of very poor quality with outbreaks of browning and spotting - as is common with this work, which was cheaply produced. The plate paper is mostly brown toned with spotting. Page 167 and plate 35 have lost bottom corner tips. Plate 37 has old paper repair - building up the bottom corner and repairing a tear. Plates 38 and 39 have fragile edges with small tears and loss and 39 has old repair in the gutter. Plate 40 has lost the bottom corner affecting one of the plant images and has other areas of loss at the edges - this plate has been laid on newer paper and tears repaired.
