The printed note at [1], to which Kirkland has added Rolleston's name, reads: 'from the author, who begs his acceptance of this part of An Inquiry into the present state of Medical Surgery, &c. it being a distince Essay, and fully illustrative, of the Subject upon which it is written. The remainder is calculated chiefly for the use of the faculty.' An Inquiry. was published in London in two volumes by J. Dodsley and William Dawson in 1783. Kirkland's dedication of the book to his patron Francis, 10th Earl of Huntingdon, is dated 1 February 1783. Thomas Kirkland [1722-1798] was a Member of the Royal Medical Society, Edinburgh; of the Medical Society, London; and of the Agricultural Society, Leicestershire. He worked a surgeon in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and in 1760 was a witness in the murder trial of Laurence Shirley, the 4th Earl Ferrers, who was hanged for the murder of his steward. Launcelot Rolleston [1737-1802] was the son of the Reverend John Rolleston, vicar of Aston-on-Trent -- thirteen miles from Ashby-de-la-Zouch -- and Dorothy Burdett, daughter of Sir Robert Burdett of nearby Foremark Hall. On the death of his father Launcelot inherited two Nottinghamshire estates, Watnall and Toynton. He served as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1781. ESTC records only two copies in the UK [British Library; Birmingham University]. Only the British Library copy also has the printed dedication leaf; theirs is inscribed in Kirkland's hand to the Revd. W. Hepworth. ESTC T45809. N° de réf. du vendeur 4159
