Using color to depict major plant zones, it reflects early developments in biogeography and draws on ideas associated with Alexander von Humboldt. The upper part of the map shows the distribution of plants in a perpendicular direction - represented by various global mountain ranges in the torrid, temperate, and frigid zones - showing elevations, climate zones, and mean temperatures of the year and of coldest and warmest months. Below is a world map on a Mercator projection, titled "Map of Schouws Phyto-Geographic Region with the Distribution of Plants, Especially Influencing the Physiognomy of the Vegetation of the Globe." Colored by phytoregion, each region indicates major tree and vegeation groups. Isothermal bands and alpine tree lines are also indicated. A beautiful and data-rich depiction of global landscapes. From the seminal 'Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena', featuring Johnston's classic symmetrical border design. Includes additional text sheets describing botanical geography. Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) was a Scottish geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Partnered with his brother William, Johnston maintained a prolific map publishing firm throughout the 19th century. Their output ranged from globes to atlases and wall maps.
