A RARE & EARLY TRANSLATION OF A CHINESE ACCOUNT OF . . . PIRATES ALONG THE SOUTH CHINA SEAS . . . CANTON, MACAU, HONG KONG, UP AND DOWN THE EAST COAST . *** This is a translation from the early original in Chinese book: QING HAI QI KI. With a preface by Ying Hing Soo. . The work begins with the preface [1809] with commentaries about the pirates in Kwangtung [Guandong or old Canton]. Soo observes the destruction and plundering of pirates in four villages. . Soo thereafter, met at a Whampo [open foreign trading port near Canton] inn Yuen Tsze. They discussed the pirate situation. Yuen open a book with title: "HISTORY OF THE PIRATES." It was a daily record of pirates and of the villagers resistance. Descriptions of the robber Lin by the non-official historian Lan E in his "Tsing Yih Ke" "HISTORY OF THE PACIFICATION OF THE ROBBERS." . Yuen Tze's book [this work] is a supplement to "Tsing Yih Ke, written September 1830. . With a preface by King Chung Ho, 1809. He also addresses the coastal action of the pirates along the Canton, Macao and Hong Kong coasts. These pirates also plundered foreign shipping and trading vessels up and down the eastern seaboard coastal areas. Hollanders, Portuguese, English and others were affected. . The pirates [rebels] were "followers of the doctrine of "Nature" believed implicitly in an obsure book written by a robber, in which it was stated, that the Buddha who should come after Shakia [Me lih] use white flags based on the Kalpa, as stated in the Tsing Yih ke." p. xlii. They were commonly called the "White Flags." . *** With the beginning of the HISTORY OF THE CHINESE PIRATES, the book outlines the early history of pirates in the eastern sea of Canton, their origins were in Annam [old Vietnam] since 1792 and onwards. . An excellent primary account from the Chinese who lived and suffered under the tyranny of the Pirates. . *** NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S NAME: There are various 'readings' of the Hanzi [Chinese characters of the author's name in various dialects: Cantonese, and others along the coast. Therefore some people refer to him as Yuen Keung, Yuen Tze, or Yuan Yung-yun. We elect to use the name YUAN Yun-lun as recorded in WorlCat, see below reference. * NOTE ABOUT THE CHINESE TITLE: Per Lust, p.703, #699: Chinese title: "CHING HAI-FEN CHI" by Yuan Yung-lun, published Canton, 1820. . *** CONDITION: The work is in its original brown paper covered boards, leading edges, corners rubbed, worn as expected for a book 187 years old. It has a 'recent' black buckram cloth spine & recent front endpapers. . The contents are clean with a couple of small bumps or indents on the signature edges, else solid and firm.
