12mo. 6.25 x 4 inches. iv + 201 pp. Bound in original half green morocco, gilt, over marbled boards; spine in compartments decorated gilt and rebacked, preserving original. Extremities a little worn, some spotting of rear flyleaves and occasional traces on plate margins; otherwise a very good clean copy. Decorative bookplate of C. J. Peacock. Illustrated by 47 engravings, by Thomas Higham (1796-1844) and others, including folding map, engraved title and folding plan of Chichester. Thomas Kitson Cromwell (1792-1870) was a Unitarian minister and antiquary. This volume of two historical excursions through Sussex was part of a series that also included Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Surrey and Kent. It first appeared in parts and then under the title Excursions in the County of Sussex (1822). The title pages of some editions may call for fifty engravings (as here), but there is no evidence of any surviving copy described, actually holding as many as this number.
