History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century (Complete Matching 5-Volume Set) ? Collins?s Select Library Edition, 1869
Author: J. H. Merle d?Aubigné, D.D. (Jean Henri Merle d?Aubigné, 1794?1872) ? Swiss Protestant pastor, theologian, and one of the most influential 19th-century historians of the Reformation.
Publisher / Year / Edition: Glasgow and London: William Collins, Sons & Company, 1869 (Vol. V title page dated 1868).
Collins?s Select Library s
New translation by Henry Beveridge, Esq., Advocate (containing the author?s latest improvements). Some volumes note additional translation/revision work by H. White, carefully revised by the author and printed from his own English edition.

Complete 5-volume set. Original publisher?s dark brown cloth bindings with ornate blind-stamped floral, foliate, and geometric designs plus a central oval medallion motif on the boards. Spines with gilt lettering (?HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION VOL. I [?V] DAUBIGNE?) and decorative gilt rules. Text only ? no plates or illustrations.

Description: Rare complete uniform set of Merle d?Aubigné?s landmark history ? widely regarded as the classic popular account of the Protestant Reformation. This is the exact 1869 Collins Select Library edition (not the earlier Oliver & Boyd or later reprints).
Vol. I?IV cover the main European Reformation (Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, the Swiss cantons, the Peasants? War, etc.).
Vol. V is separately titled ?The Reformation in England? (covering Henry VIII, Wolsey, Tyndale, Latimer, Cranmer, and the break with Rome).
Features the famous Theodore Beza motto on every title page: ?By accessory, I mean the state of affairs in this fading and transitory life? By principal, I mean the spiritual government??
A cornerstone for church historians, theology students, and collectors of Victorian religious classics. This uniform 1869 set in original bindings is increasingly scarce.

Condition: Good / solid reading & display copy.
Bindings: All five volumes firm and complete. Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corners with light fraying (typical for 155+ year-old books); gilt titles still clear and attractive. No splits, no detached boards.
Internals: Every page present and intact ? no torn, missing, loose, or repaired leaves anywhere. Text remains crisp and fully legible throughout. Light to moderate foxing and age-toning as expected for the period. Minor water/damp staining visible on a few endpapers and title-page margins (most noticeable in Vol. V, very light elsewhere) but does not affect any text. No inscriptions, no library marks, no underlining. A clean, complete, and very usable set ? far superior to many surviving copies of this edition.

Approximate page count: Each volume substantial (roughly 350?450 pp.); total set well over 1,800 pages.
Each book weighs between 350 and 402g, all 5 volumes together 1907g.

This is a genuine, complete, matching 1869 Collins edition in original decorative cloth ? perfect for display or serious reading. The water staining is minor and confined to non-text areas; the books open and read beautifully. All photos are of the exact books you will receive.
