Historically significant edition of an early American Catholic family Bible in the Douay Rheims Version with annotations by Father George Leo Haydock. It is a distinct edition from the concurrently-published edition from England that had Haydock?s annotations abridged by Father Husenbeth, in that this edition contains the full unabridged annotations, is in the larger ?Imperial? quarto size (13? x 10?), and contains a slight revision of the New Testament text by the American priests, Frs. J. R. Bayley and James McMahon. It remained in publication for many years, and was the edition selected for reproduction by Catholic Treasures.

Beautifully bound in full leather with original gilt-ornamented covers and beveled edges. Later spine with original six gilt panels laid down and offset by raised and knurled bands. Gilt inner dentelles and cover edges. All edges gilt. Full page plates including frontispieces and engraved titles to each testament and engraved publisher?s certificate. Corners slightly bumped. Occasional paper tears. Offsetting by plates. Interior reflects age with browning and foxing, examples evident in photographs. Rear cover slightly bowed. Worm holes to rear cover at lower right. Engraved Family Record pages are present and blank, but are inserted over several pages rater than being gathered into one section.
