Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay & Sons, Ltd., Suffolk. One gathering (pp. 529?536) remains entirely unopened along the top margin, an increasingly uncommon survival feature indicating minimal prior handling. The folded sheets were never trimmed by the binder; the triangular folds visible are original to manufacture and not post-publication defects. A small number of leaves show subtle production creasing from the original folding of the signature, a normal manufacturing artifact that does not affect the integrity of the binding or readability of the text.

Constance Garnett?s translations were the first to introduce Dostoevsky to the English-speaking world and remain central to his early reception in the West. Macmillan?s early twentieth-century editions, particularly those printed by Richard Clay & Sons, are valued for their durable cloth bindings and clear typography. Copies retaining unopened gatherings are increasingly uncommon and are often regarded as evidence of minimal prior handling. This volume represents a sound and well-preserved early Macmillan example of one of Dostoevsky?s most enduring novels.
