THE DEVOTIONAL MASTERPIECE OF THOMAS À KEMPIS IN A CLASSIC VICTORIAN FINE BINDING This mid-19th-century edition of the most influential devotional work of the late Middle Ages is a testament to the enduring power of Kempis' philosophy. Attributed to the 15th-century monk Thomas à Kempis, the text remains the gold standard for ascetic spiritual guidance. This copy, translated by John Payne with an essay by Thomas Chalmers, is presented in a dignified, professional binding from the celebrated London house of Hatchard & Son. PHYSICAL FEATURES: Full period leather by Hatchard & Son (Piccadilly, London), binders to the Royal Family. Features four raised spine bands, blind-stamped board outlines, and slightly beveled edges. All edges gilt (AEG) with gilt spine titles. Engraved frontispiece of the Crucifixion (with characteristic light offsetting to the title page). An elegant, portable 12mo (7.25 inches). xxvi, 26-321 pages CONDITION: Very Good -- Bindings are exceptionally tight and square. The leather exhibits a deep, rich patina with only minor shelf wear and slight color loss at the joints. The text block is clean with light, even toning; features a few contemporary pencil underlinings and margin notes that reflect a previous owner's careful study. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Composed in the 1420s, The Imitation of Christ represents the height of the Devotio Moderna movement. It shifted the focus of Christian life away from external ritual and toward a personal, interior relationship with the divine. Its simplicity influenced everyone from St. Ignatius of Loyola to Thomas Merton, making it a foundational text of Western spiritual philosophy. SUBJECTS: Christian Mysticism, Asceticism, 19th Century Fine Bindings, Devotio Moderna, Spiritual Exercises, Christian Devotional Literature, Fine Bindings. N° de réf. du vendeur 20977
