A propos de cet article

XIV; Ill. 238 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - - Small abrasions on the dustjacket. Otherwise good and clean. - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben. Sonst gut und sauber. - At the end of the eighteenth century, Lancastrian Henry Blundell was building a collection of nearly 600 marble and bronze sculptures, over 400 of which were from the ancient world. The story of how he first obtained them and then created a suitable setting for them in his home at Ince is an intriguing one, even for the non-specialist. Two centuries later, Blundell's unique and priceless collection is still virtually intact and in the care of the National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside. Despite its size and importance, the collection has never been completely catalogued or published. Part 1 of Volume I introduced the collection to a wider public and provided a detailed study of the female portraits. Now, in an accessible as well as authoritative presentation, Jane Fejfer gives an equally detailed and illuminating study of the much larger number of Ince Blundell male portraits. Her expert work is enhanced with excellent photographs by David Flower. Placing a remarkable collection in its archaeological and collecting context, this work is a vital reference for anyone studying classical sculpture.
