Sir Thomas Munro (1761?1827) was a decorated Scottish army officer and administrator with the East India Company. His strategic aptitude quickly earned the notice of commanders like Sir Eyre Coote and later Colonel Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington), with whom he maintained a professional correspondence on tactics. He served in the intelligence department during the siege of Bangalore and consistently advocated for the expansion of British territory to ensure regional stability. As an administrator he established the "ryotwár" system of land tenure and served as Governor of Madras.
