It was a time of infamy; a time of irreversible sociological changes; of developing incredulous antinomianism, resulting in a flood of nationalistic thinking that took over our schools, our churches, our whole approach to right and wrong! It was a time when women and sex were downgraded from something sacred within the protective Godly sanctity of matrimony, to a strategy, used by unholy merchants peddling everything from beer and shaving lotions to automobiles, stocks and bonds. What affect could this possibly have on a growing boy? I was the rich little kid who lived on the hill, and fared sumptuously every day, while most were dealing with inhuman working conditions or unemployment; and remember; there was no unemployment compensation back then. A quarter of our population was out on the street, out of work, and out of self-respect. As a child of eight or ten; I remember the faces of those people who came and knocked on our door begging for a meal. No one was ever sent away hungry. My mother saw to this. If it was mealtime; they ate whatever we ate. Otherwise, she would fix up a meal from whatever was around; fried scrapple, potatoes, eggs, and applesauce or whatever home canned fruit she had. I remember daddy picking up hitchhikers and giving them money. I also remember him yelling at his employees like they were dogs and firing them on the spot for being lazy, stealing, or having a bad attitude, which was unnerving to me as a boy. I always felt estranged from the rest of my siblings, causing me to share my feelings of loneliness with friends, as substitutes for my brother and sisters.
