17.5x59.5 cm/Folding map in a format similar to a timetable map. Self-wrappers. Good to very good condition, with residue at top (previous mounting strips?) and light wear at edges. Short archival tape mends along four folds. There are maps on both sides when folded out. The primary map shows the subway lines completed to that date. The subway opened in 1904, the year before, making this among the earliest New York City subway maps. (We are aware of one small promotional card with a map of the subway from 1904.) Printed under the map on this side is a table showing times for rides to and from Grand Central Station, listing all of the stations then operating. This map shows all of Manhattan along with the western portion of the Bronx to the Bronx Botanical Gardens. The map on the verso is a street map of Manhattan with concentric circles to show distances from Grand Central. This map shows only as far north as 140th Street, with small parts of Brooklyn along with Hoboken and Jersey City, New Jersey. On the main map the Williamsburgh Bridge is shown and named; on the verso map, it is shown as "New East River Bridge." There is also a "Proposed Bridge" shown between these two, but it is north of what ultimately would be the site of the Manhattan Bridge. This proposed bridge was to run from Scammel and Gouverneur Streets in Manhattan to the western edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
