The seven "horrid novels" named by Austen in Northanger Abbey, which were recovered by Montague Summers and Michael Sadleir in the 1920s. Their work disproved the previous theory that the books were wholly Austen's inventions. Collected for the first time by Folio Society are Castle of Wolfenbach by Eliza Parsons, The Orphan of the Rhine by Eleanor Sleath, Clermont by Regina Maria Roche, The Necromancer by Lawrence Flammenberg, The Midnight Bell by Francis Latham, Horrid Mysteries by The Marquis Grosse, and The Mysterous Warning by Eliza Parsons. Different introductory essay in each volume by Devendra P. Varma. First thus. The Folio Society, 1968; no later printings indicated. Black cloth boards backed with ribbed black leather cloth, gilt titling on spine and sawtooth design at meeting of cloths on front and rear boards. Overall VG- condition, in good-/poor condition slipcase. Bindings are tight, sturdy, and square; mild wear to edges of boards, gilt remains bright and bold; front board on a two or three volumes very slightly bowed, very light surface scratch on front board of Horrid Mysteries; text very good throughout set; black top-stain remains dark. Top panel partially detached and lightly held to side panel with scotch tape along one side only; wear, paper splitting over corners and edges; closed tear starting along one bottom corner as well. Still, a fairly presentable copy of this rather scarce Folio Society set. Due to the size/weight of this set extra charges will apply for international and/or expedited shipping.
