Original watercolour depicting two lovebirds perched upon a blossoming branch with yellow flowers. Initialled lower left "E.J.D.". 20.5 x 15cm. Framed and glazed (45 x 36cm in total). Original printed label to the rear for The Brook Street Art Gallery, New Bond Street, London. There is rippling to the sheet (which appears to be vellum or parchment, although it is difficult to tell without removing the picture from the frame), otherwise condition is very good, the watercolour remaining clean and fresh, the colours bold and vivid. The mount with toning and a few spots of foxing. The period gilt wood frame with a few small knocks is otherwise in good order. An attractive watercolour by the artist and illustrator Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957), in his typically delicate, luminous style. One of the most talented book illustrators of the early twentieth century, Detmold's depictions of the natural world were characterised by their painstaking detail and somewhat ethereal feel, resulting, in part, from the combined influences of traditional Japanese art, the work of Albrecht Dürer, and the later Art Nouveau movement over his work, as well as Detmold's own meticulous understanding of the birds, insects and animals he painted, and his broader tendency towards the fantastical (as best shown in his illustrations to The Arabian Nights).
