First edition thus, an attractively bound set of this early 18th-century pocket edition of Homer's epic poems. The Odyssey includes a detailed folding map of the places visited by Ulysses in his journey from Troy to Ithaca, reproduced from Ortelius' celebrated Renaissance atlas. Originally engraved in 1597, it is the earliest known attempt at mapping the geography of the Odyssey. Considered the first modern atlas of the world, Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum was first published in 1570 and republished multiple times with additions. Ortelius's map of Ulysses' travels - here bound between pages 24 and 25 - is titled "Ulyssis Errores" ("The wanderings of Ulysses") and was first included in the atlas in 1601 as part of the Parergon, an historical supplement. It illustrates the Mediterranean Sea extending from the regions of southern Italy to the western coasts of Turkey. All the main stops in Ulysses' voyage are marked with their Latin names; also mentioned are the locations of key characters encountered by Ulysses, such as Circe, Polyphemus, Scylla, and Calypso. "The oldest known map of the wanderings of Ulysses was the work of the cartographer and humanist Abraham Ortelius. [it] was one of the first maps, if not the very first, of a particular historical subject. Ortelius chose the places he showed as the sites of the adventures of Ulysses from the various identifications that he found in ancient authors" (Wolf, p. 310). This edition was edited by the Transylvanian scholar Stephan Bergler (c.1680-1746), and it features the original Greek text printed in parallel with a Latin translation. Bergler later became one of the main assistants to Johann Albert Fabricius in the production of his landmark bibliography of Greek authors (Bibliotheca graeca, 1705-1728). 2 vols, duodecimo (135 x 65 mm). With engraved frontispiece in each, and folding map. Early 19th-century straight-grain red morocco, smooth spines divided by triple gilt rule, titles in gilt direct to second and fourth compartments, others richly gilt, double frame of single filet and dotted roll in gilt on boards, turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Presentation inscription dated 1868 to front free endpaper of each, and obscured inscription dated 1723 to frontispiece recto of vol. I, a few very minor ink annotations. Light rubbing at extremities, a few leaves standing a little proud, slight wear at head of front joint of vol. II. A very attractive copy. N° de réf. du vendeur 135839
