In full leather prize binding for Lambrook School in Bracknell. Raised bands with gilt tooling, compartments decorated in gilt. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was Dickens' first published novel, originally serialized in monthly parts by Chapman & Hall April 1836 through November 1837, and published in book form on November 17, 1837. Charles Dickens, struggling to establish himself as an author, had been selling stories to the Monthly Magazine and the Evening Chronicle that were popular and earned him an enthusiastic reception. Impressed, publisher Chapman & Hall approached him. The result was the creation of Mr. Pickwick, and an illustrious career. Dickens was twenty-five years old. Provenance - prize for J Rushbroooke to the front, his bookplate to the front paste down. Approximately 7 ½inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition - with gilt titles and decoration, bruised and damaged to the top of the spine. Joints good condition - worn and rubbed. Corners good condition - gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition gilt crest to the front, minor marks and scratches. Page edges good condition - all gilt. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition - sound. Paste downs good condition - marbled paper, bookplate to the front. End papers good condition - marbled. Title good condition tanned, thin paper.
