Bound in contemporary full calf, gilt, with gilt borders on board; Spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title labels, gilt. Marbled boards. splits in leather at head and tail of spine and hinges starting to crack back hinge nearly detatched . Occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. First published 1651, a successor to Holy Living of 1650. Jeremy Taylor (1612-67), as a royalist Anglican cleric fell into disfavour during the period of the Commonwealth and Protectorate but following the Restoration was made Bishop of Down and Connor, with responsibility for Dromore diocese, in Ireland from 1661. This edition also includes The Golden Grove, a popular manual of devotion, named after the Carmarthenshire seat of Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Carberry (1600-86), to whom Taylor was private chaplain after 1646.
