A propos de cet article

Description :

Quarto. 24 leaves, printed rectos only, including six leaves of snapshot photographs of various (all small) sizes (31 photos in all). Bound into a cardstock folder with two brass clasps. Overall very good, with mild general wear, including some toning to the tape used to adhere many of the photographs to the paper. A detailed and nicely made souvenir book commemorating in some detail the events of a seventeen-week course in public speaking offered by proponents of Dale Carnegie's system of self-improvement. The roster of students, with home addresses and nicknames, as well as recaps of most of the sessions, which were centered around the students giving speeches on various subjects; a kind of exposure therapy for those lacking in self-confidence to boost their public speaking abilities and competencies in social interaction. While most of the students are men, there are also some women, and there are a wide range of ages and occupations represented. While most of the photographs are not captioned, they mostly show the courses in session, capturing both the speakers and the audience. Carnegie himself was the author of one of the best-selling books of all time, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" (1936), which has never been out of print, and which remains a mainstay of self-help and confidence-building, aimed both at one's private and working life. While not the first book to offer life advice to its readers, it is nevertheless rightly regarded as the first "self-help" book, and certainly the first to appeal to such a wide range of people. His course in public speaking initiated in 1912, and by the time of this 1951 course, the concept was well-established. Only three years later, in 1954, Carnegie founded Dale Carnegie & Associates, a company to manage these courses and all manner of related products and services under the banner of his philosophy and teachings. A nicely organized and detailed document of a typical Dale Carnegie course during a period of flourishing; both for the concept itself and for the American economy. N° de réf. du vendeur 13521
