A propos de cet article

218803Delightful large folding pictorial colour world map published as a supplement to Shonen Kurabu (?????) v. 20, no. 12 on December 1938. 79 x 109.5cm. Small inset map of the world at lower right. Mounted on linen. A children's map of the world, its charming nature belying the propagandistic period when it was produced. The map is covered with small pictographs representing the resources of countries around the world. Japanese territories and mandates are marked in red. The general editor, whose name gave legitimacy to the publication was Sat? Yasutar? ????? (1893-1977), a professor at the Tokyo University of Education. The illustrator was Shimada Keizo, who created Boken Dankichi (?????) series, which was published on Shonen Club between 1933 and 1939. The series was very popular at the time. Stereotyped portraits of costumed caricature figures indicate residents of countries around the world. A wealth of information on the countries' resources is given both pictorially and through brief captions. Ships off the southeast coast of Australia and at Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand represent the export of lamb wool and meat. Wheat exports are represented by a ship off the tip of Western Australia, with the commodity indicated by sacks of flour. Gold mining and cattle ranching can also be seen, as well as representations of platypus and wombats. Near Broome and the Coral Sea pearl divers are seen. In the Western Hemisphere, Bermuda is indicated by the British flag held aloft by a Royal Navy sailor on a boat near a caption in red saying coral reef; on the west side of the continent, the US Pacific Fleet is represented by five steel-grey ships south of Baja California. The Rocky Mountains are the backdrop for the largest figures on the continent; Native Americans and African Americans. A ship shows cotton exports offshore from Galveston; while the flags of many countries fly over Central America. A young man holding a red-covered book stands behind a white towered hall in Boston - the caption in red reads ?? (university) representing many institutions rather than one in particular.…
