London, John Cumming, 1800. Octavo, viii, 88 pages. Stab-sewn, but neatly disbound with only slight traces of paper residue on the spine; minimal wear to the spines of a few sections; first page (the half-title) and last page slightly foxed and dusty; minimal signs of age and use; a very good copy with an early ownership inscription on the first page ('Wm. Fenton, Spring-Grove', now slightly trimmed). George Washington (1732-1799) died on 14 December 1799; the four-page 'advertisement' at the beginning of this posthumous publication contains much pertinent information. 'The two letters of General Washington that are given entire . were published in the "Recreations in Agriculture, [Natural History, Arts, and Miscellaneous Literature]" for February last year. James Anderson was the editor of that journal. Pages 33-74 of this pamphlet contain 'the rude draught of a letter to General Washington' dated London, 10 January 1800; it was 'written out with an intention to be transcribed, and forwarded by an early opportunity, when the news of the death of that much respected man reached this country: of course it was never sent'.…
