Astara, founded by Earlyne and Robert Chaney in 1951, is a long running mail order esoteric fraternity whose correspondence course structure exemplifies the popularity of west coast American metaphysical philosophy at midcentury and onward. A mix of Christian mysticism, borrowed philosophies from Eastern religions, and the malleable Hermetic tradition, Astara falls somewhere between more accepted western magical tradition groups and the still-developing syncretic movement which would come to be called New Age.
