A propos de cet article

Description :

Pamphlet (6 3/4" x 5 1/4"), quarter-bound over marbled boards, simply labeled on the spine "Old Pamphlets XIII". LACKS General title page, and begins with specific (Triplici Nodo, t.p.). 112 pp = 135 + 12. Apologie lacking pp. 97-8]. Numerous instances of brief, scholarly marginalia, with a thin-nibbed pen. Also tick marks in margin, as well as sections neatly underlined in same hand. Light staining to several groups of pages, and one, 2-inch closed tear to title leaf of James's preamble (A1-A2) but overall pages are in good condition. Heraldic woodcut, headpieces, Drop caps, tailpieces, No (April) date or month on title page and verso has No warning against unauthorized printing. Hence, this copy must be one or other of the three issues of the Second Edition, but as this copy lacks the "general" title page, it seems impossible to tell precisely which issue (of the Second Edition). NOTE: This copy is NOT the 1609 edition (see ESTC S109153) which, like this copy, lacks a day and month date on the title page and [lacks] the Warning against the unrevised copy on the verso. This variant MAY have had the warning inserted on an extra leaf at end, but if so, it is no longer present. A distinguishing and possibly identifying point of this edition is the presence of the Latin phrase near the bottom of the title page "Authoritate Regia" (and NOT, as in the copy cited above, the Latin phrase: "Cum priuilegio regali"). (STC 14401). ESTC: S109153) This gathering of very important Jacobean explanations, refutations, edicts and warnings, (and of course the Oath of Allegiance itself, issued several years before) was the centerpiece of major controversy between the Catholic church and the royal authority. The first is King James (still anonymously written, in this second edition, of which there were at least three issues). "After the Gunpowder Plot, the Jacobean parliament passed into law a controversial oath of allegiance that required English Catholic recusants to swear their loyalty to James and to deny the pope's power to depose monarchs. Not surprisingly, the law met immediately with detractors. Among the most vocal were Cardinal Robert Bellarmine and Pope Paul V, both of whom sent letters condemning the oath into England shortly after the law was passed. Most monarchs would have assigned the task of responding to these letters to a trusted theologian. King James, however, indulged his personal interest in theological debate by responding to the criticism himself. In February, 1607/8, he published anonymously Triplici Nodo, Triplex Cuneus: or, An Apologie for the Oath of Allegiance, a quarto treatise of 112 pages that accused his detractors of having misunderstood the narrow civil purpose of the oath." ("Anonymity's Subject: James I and the Debate over the Oath of Allegiance". by Marcy North writing in New Literary History, 22(2): 215-232). -------------------------------------------------------------- The Oath of Allegiance of 1606 was an oath requiring English Catholics to swear allegiance to James I (1566-1625) over the Pope. It was adopted by Parliament.in 1605 .[and] proclaimed law in 1606, and because of it, the country was roiled in controversy largely between 1608 and 1614, but traces of the fray extended to 1620. It consisted of seven affirmations which, couched behind the minutae of law and scripture respectively, revealed two massive powers struggling in this archetypal battle between the primacy of Church vs. State. Its central tenet required that the adherent swear alliegance and ". truly and sincerely acknowledge, profess, testify, and declare in my conscience before God and the world, that our Sovereign Lord King James, is lawful and rightful King of this realm, and of all other in his Majesties Dominions and Countries; And that the Pope neither of himself, nor by any authorities of the Church or See of Rome, or by any means with any other hath any power or authority to depose the King, or to dispose any of his Majesty's kin.
