One of the more bizarre conspiracy theories that emerged during the tragic Lindbergh baby kidnaping and murder was developed by a WWI veteran named Hal Walton and perpetuated for a decade by his organization, the Committee of Unwanted Lindbergh Witnesses (shortened to the Committee of Witnesses). Walton claimed that "Japanese and German army agents in league with traitors in our own government and Wall Street, ganged up on [Lindbergh] and stole his son." According to Walton, this shadowy cabal was angered by Lindbergh's relationship with China during the Sino-Japanese war and because of his association with a vaguely defined group of associates who hijacked a lucrative aviation contract with China over the German Luft Hansa Aviation Co. Furthermore, Walton also claimed that over a thousand other murders were linked to this same cabal, including the unsolved 3X murders in Queens, the two victims of the ?Red Circle Slayer,? the unsolved kidnaping and murder of a 10-year-old boy named Charles Mattson in Tacoma, WA, and the 1931 Collings Yacht Murder. In one of the broadsides offered here, corrupt New Jersey state officials are indicted for their involvement. Walton and his shadowy band of supporters continued pushing their claims long after public interest in the Lindbergh case had waned, and following the end of WWII, Walton was back in the press pushing conspiracies around Pearl Harbor, the relationship of Secretary of War Henry Stimson with the Axis powers, and role of J. Edgar Hoover and Herbert Hoover as Communist agents. The three items offered here, none of which we could find separately catalogued in WorldCat, include: Soldiers Against Our Children, 17th Edition. New York City: Committee of Witnesses, ca. 1937/38. 17" x 11" broadside. Penciled notation along the top reads, "Distributed at Pennsylvania Station!! - by a woman 5-10-38." New York City: Hal Walton, Chairman for the Committee of Witnesses, [1937]. 17" x 11" broadside printed in red.
